Chapter 27 - The Grand Vault of St. Jude

"We don't go to the Metropole empty-handed," Luca said three hours later as our armored convoy moved through the industrial fog of the South Wharf.

The morning mist clung to the stagnant water of the shipping canals. Ahead of us, rising like a gothic monument among the rusted iron warehouses, stood the forgotten Cathedral of Saint Jude. Its stained-glass windows were boarded up with rotted plywood, its twin spires piercing the grey sky like broken teeth.

"If Corrado wants the Charter," I said, holding the velvet box securely in my lap, "he thinks he can take it by force because he assumes I am powerless."

Luca turned to me from across the leather seat. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across my knuckles. "You are anything but powerless, Elena. In twenty-four hours, you’ve stood against an armed assault, unraveled a twenty-year conspiracy, and stood tall before a mafia boss who once terrified this city."

A faint, sad smile touched my lips. "A few days ago, Vanessa called me a worthless maid for bringing you chicken soup in a chipped bowl."

Luca’s eyes softened with a dangerous, dark amusement. "That chipped bowl saved my mother’s life. And it saved mine. Never forget who you are, Elena."

The SUV came to a halt behind the cathedral’s decaying rectory. Marco and four heavily armed soldiers secured the perimeter while Luca and I made our way toward the crypt beneath the altar.

The air inside the cathedral was cold and damp, thick with the smell of moldering wood, stone dust, and ancient incense.

We descended a spiral stone staircase into the crypt. Unlike the ruins above, the subterranean level was constructed from massive blocks of solid granite. At the end of a long, vaulted hall stood an immense circular vault door, forged from solid blackened iron, adorned with seven interlocking wheels.

In the center of the iron door was a raised circular dais.

"The Carbone Seal," I murmured.

I stepped forward, pulling the antique pocket watch from my pocket. On the bottom of the watch casing was a matching raised stamp.

I approached the cold iron door. My reflection stared back at me in the polished steel plate—a woman transformed. The nervous, compliant maid had vanished; in her place stood the daughter of Lorenzo Carbone.

I pressed the base of the watch firmly into the center of the dais and turned it ninety degrees to the left.

A deep, mechanical groan resonated from deep within the stone walls. Heavy counterweights shifted behind the granite slabs. With a hiss of released air that had been trapped for three decades, the massive circular iron door swung outward on silent, counterbalanced hinges.

Luca drew his weapon and stepped through the threshold first, his flashlight beam piercing the gloom.

The beam landed on a pedestal in the center of the octagonal chamber. Resting upon it was an ornate lockbox of polished titanium and gold, alongside a massive, leather-bound volume stamped in pure gold leaf:

*THE ORIGINAL COVENANT OF THE FOUNDING HOUSES.*

And beside the ledger lay an old, unopened envelope addressed in faded black ink:

May you like

*"To Luca Moretti — From Lorenzo Carbone. Open this when my daughter stands beside you."*
