Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at the Estate

By evening, the Gold Coast mansion had returned to a state of quiet, dignified elegance—minus thirty plates of uneaten lobster and one very disgruntled former fiancée.
Inside the bright, warm country-style kitchen, the air was filled with the rich, savory aroma of simmering chicken broth, fresh garlic, and thick homemade noodles.
Mrs. Moretti stood by the large porcelain stove, a wooden spoon in her hand, stirring a massive pot of soup just like she had for decades. Beside her, wearing a comfortable linen apron instead of my old black housekeeping uniform, I chopped fresh celery and carrots on the wooden butcher block.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Luca walked in, loosening his silk tie as he tossed his suit jacket over a chair. He stopped in the doorway, closing his eyes for a brief moment as the familiar scent washed over him.
“Something smells incredible,” Luca murmured, walking over to the stove.
“It’s your favorite, sweetheart,” Mrs. Moretti said, smiling warmly as she ladled a steaming portion of the soup into a clean, chipped white ceramic bowl. She handed it directly to her son.
Luca took the bowl, holding it in both hands, before looking across the kitchen counter at me. The harsh, cold aura of the ruthless mafia boss was entirely gone, replaced by the genuine warmth of a man who had finally found his way back home.
“To new beginnings,” Luca said softly, raising the bowl slightly toward us.

“To remembering where we came from,” I replied with a smile, clinking my glass of water against his bowl.
Outside, the Chicago lights twinkled across the skyline, but inside this kitchen, the storm had finally passed, leaving behind something far stronger than gold or silver: family, truth, and a very simple bowl of homemade chicken soup.
