Chapter 17 - WHAT THEY TOLD LEO LATER

When Leo was twelve, our parents told him I had been adopted.
True.
Then they added something false.
They said my new family had requested no contact.
That reopening the past would confuse me.
That I was happy.
That contacting me would be selfish.
Leo believed them.
“At eighteen?”
I asked.
“I asked again.”
“And?”
“Same answer.”
“You were an adult.”
“I know.”
“Did you try?”
He looked down.
“No.”
That mattered.
He had been innocent at eight.
Less so at eighteen.
Not evil.
Passive.
May you like
Fearful.
Comfortable enough to accept the story that demanded nothing from him.
