Chapter 1 – Darkness Falls

The kitchen disappeared into absolute blackness.

One heartbeat earlier, the overhead lights had glared against the polished marble countertops.

Now...

Nothing.

Not a single bulb remained alive.

The refrigerator stopped humming.

The microwave display vanished.

Even the security system that Trent bragged about every weekend went silent.

"What the hell?" Richard barked.

Helen's laughter died in her throat.

Nicole lowered her phone.

"My livestream—"

The sentence ended as the Wi-Fi failed.

For one suspended second, the only sound inside the house was everyone's breathing.

Then came another noise.

A metallic click.

Not inside the kitchen.

Outside.

The unmistakable clang of the property's front security gate unlocking.

Trent tightened his grip on the bloodstained wooden stick.

"Nobody move."

His voice had changed.

It wasn't angry anymore.

It was cautious.

He glanced toward the front hallway where darkness swallowed every inch of the foyer.

"Richard," he whispered.

"What?"

"Did you leave the gate open?"

"No."

Another sound echoed through the house.

Crunch.

Gravel shifting beneath heavy boots.

Slow.

Measured.

Someone was walking up the driveway.

Nicole swallowed.

"Dad..."

Richard forced a laugh.

"It's probably the power company."

At five in the morning?

Nobody believed him.

I remained curled around my stomach.

Every muscle screamed.

Warm blood trickled down my leg, soaking into my pajama pants.

The baby moved again.

A tiny flutter.

Still alive.

Thank God.

I closed my eyes for one second.

Alex...

Please tell me the SOS worked.

Please.

Outside...

A black pickup truck sat sideways across the driveway.

Its headlights were off.

Its engine had been cut almost a minute earlier.

A tall man stepped from the driver's seat.

Six-foot-four.

Broad shoulders.

Short military haircut.

Calm eyes.

Alex Carter.

Former Marine Raider.

He stared at the mansion without moving.

His phone screen glowed faintly in his hand.

EMERGENCY SOS RECEIVED

LOCATION CONFIRMED

No text.

No call.

Just coordinates.

His little sister had never triggered Emergency SOS in her entire life.

If she had pressed it now...

She couldn't speak.

Which meant only one thing.

Something catastrophic was happening.

Alex quietly opened the truck's rear compartment.

Inside rested a heavy-duty flashlight, trauma medical kit, bolt cutters, and a crowbar.

No firearms.

He had promised himself years ago that he would never bring a gun into a family rescue unless there was absolutely no alternative.

Tonight...

He prayed that promise would hold.

Inside the house...

Trent crept toward the hallway.

The wooden stick rested against his shoulder.

Helen whispered sharply.

"Don't go alone."

Trent ignored her.

His boots crossed the hardwood floor.

One step.

Two.

Three.

The darkness felt alive.

Then—

BANG.

The front door exploded inward.

Not from an explosion.

From raw force.

The deadbolt ripped straight out of the frame.

Wood splintered across the marble foyer.

Nicole screamed.

"What was that?"

Nobody answered.

Because a beam of blinding white light suddenly cut through the darkness.

A tactical flashlight.

Powerful enough to burn afterimages into their eyes.

It swept across the hallway.

Across family portraits.

Across shattered wood.

Then stopped.

Directly on Trent.

The voice that followed was calm.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Drop the weapon."

Trent shielded his eyes.

"Who the hell are you?"

The answer came immediately.

"I'm the man she called."

Silence.

Alex stepped into the house.

Rainwater dripped from his black jacket.

His flashlight never moved.

Neither did his expression.

Then the beam shifted.

It landed on me.

Lying on the kitchen floor.

Covered in blood.

His breathing stopped.

For half a second...

The disciplined Marine disappeared.

Only a brother remained.

His face drained of color.

"Lena..."

He whispered my name so softly that no one else heard it.

Then his eyes traveled upward.

To the wooden stick.

Fresh blood stained its end.

He looked at Trent.

Then at Helen.

Then Richard.

Finally Nicole, whose phone was still recording despite having no internet connection.

Alex's voice became terrifyingly quiet.

"Who touched my sister?"

Nobody answered.

Richard finally stepped forward.

"You can't just break into someone's—"

"I asked..."

Alex interrupted.

"...who touched her?"

Trent forced himself to laugh.

"She's my wife."

Alex looked at him.

Expressionless.

"No."

One word.

Nothing more.

"You stopped being her husband the second you raised that stick."

Trent spat onto the floor.

"Get out of my house."

Alex slowly removed a small object from his pocket.

Not a weapon.

A sheriff's emergency response badge.

Volunteer Tactical Search and Rescue.

Issued after his military retirement.

"My rescue alert came through county emergency dispatch."

His eyes never left Trent.

"Law enforcement is already on the way."

Helen's confidence vanished.

"He's bluffing."

Alex didn't even look at her.

"I wouldn't test that theory."

Sirens echoed faintly in the distance.

Far away.

But getting closer.

Nicole's face turned white.

"Dad..."

Richard whispered a curse.

Trent gripped the stick tighter.

Alex noticed.

"So..."

he said evenly,

"you're choosing violence."

Without another word, Trent charged.

The wooden stick swung through the darkness toward Alex's head.

Alex didn't step backward.

He stepped in.

Fast.

One hand caught Trent's wrist.

The other slammed into his elbow with surgical precision.

CRACK.

The stick clattered across the tile.

Trent screamed.

Before he could recover, Alex pivoted, swept his legs from beneath him, and pinned him face-first onto the kitchen floor.

Everything happened in less than three seconds.

Richard froze.

Helen gasped.

Nicole backed against the wall.

Alex twisted Trent's arm behind his back just enough to stop him from moving.

Then he looked directly at me.

His voice softened.

"It's over."

I wanted to believe him.

I truly did.

But as another wave of pain tore through my abdomen, something warm spread beneath me across the cold kitchen tiles.

Alex saw it instantly.

His military calm vanished.

His eyes widened.

"Lena..."

He looked down.

Blood.

Far too much blood.

He turned toward the front door and roared with every ounce of strength left in his lungs.

"WE NEED A MEDIC!"

May you like

Outside...

The approaching sirens suddenly became deafening.
