Chapter 10 – The Night Before

The forensic laboratory was nearly empty when Detective Laura Kim arrived.

Only the soft hum of computers broke the silence.

Ethan Morales was already waiting.

His face was unusually pale.

"You weren't exaggerating," Laura said.

"No."

He pointed to the monitor.

"I've watched it three times."

"And it gets worse every time."

The timestamp read:

June 9 – 9:42 P.M.

The hidden garage camera overlooked only part of the room.

A workbench.

Several shelves.

The family SUV.

No audio.

Just video.

Laura pressed Play.

Trent entered first.

A few seconds later came Richard.

Then Helen.

Finally, Nicole.

All four looked around carefully, believing they were somewhere private.

Laura frowned.

"They didn't know about this camera."

Ethan nodded.

"It wasn't connected to the home's security system."

"What was it connected to?"

"The garage door opener."

Richard had apparently installed it years earlier to monitor expensive tools.

Ironically...

It had become the one camera the family forgot existed.

The recording continued.

Trent placed several folders on the workbench.

Richard unfolded a map.

Helen pointed toward one corner of the paper.

The image wasn't clear enough to read.

Nicole paced nervously.

Although there was no sound, their body language said everything.

They weren't arguing.

They were planning.

Ethan clicked another button.

"We enhanced the video."

A second version appeared.

Still silent.

But sharper.

Laura leaned closer.

She could now make out several words written across the map.

Hospital

Route

Custody

Her stomach tightened.

Another detective entered carrying a lip-reading specialist's report.

"We can't guarantee one hundred percent accuracy."

Laura took the papers.

"But?"

"The expert is highly confident."

She began reading.

Helen:

"Once the baby is born..."

Richard:

"No one will believe her."

Trent:

"She'll either stay..."

The next sentence made Laura stop breathing.

"Or she won't survive it."

Silence filled the lab.

Ethan slowly removed his glasses.

"My God..."

The report continued.

Nicole appeared to ask a question.

The specialist interpreted Trent's response.

"Accidents happen every day."

Laura immediately reached for her phone.

"Rachel."

The district attorney answered on the second ring.

"Please tell me you have something."

Laura spoke quietly.

"We're upgrading the case."

By noon, an emergency meeting filled the district attorney's conference room.

Rachel Monroe spread every piece of evidence across the table.

"The kitchen assault."

"The hidden cameras."

"The deleted text messages."

"The garage meeting."

"The neighbor's notebook."

She looked around the room.

"This wasn't domestic violence."

She paused.

"It was a criminal enterprise operating inside a family."

Sheriff Brooks nodded.

"So what's the next step?"

Rachel didn't hesitate.

"We present everything to the grand jury."

Meanwhile...

Lena was learning how to hold Hope for the very first time.

A nurse carefully lifted the tiny infant from the incubator.

Every tube had to remain perfectly positioned.

Every movement required precision.

"Support her head," Nurse Emily whispered.

Lena's hands trembled.

"I'm afraid I'll hurt her."

"You won't."

The nurse gently settled Hope against Lena's chest.

For a moment...

Hope stirred.

Then...

She relaxed.

Her tiny heartbeat steadied.

The monitor reflected it immediately.

Emily smiled.

"She knows her mother's heartbeat."

Lena couldn't hold back her tears.

"Hi, my beautiful girl."

Hope's tiny fingers rested against Lena's hospital gown.

So impossibly small.

Yet somehow...

Strong enough to heal a broken heart.

Alex quietly stepped outside the NICU.

His phone buzzed.

It was Detective Laura.

"I didn't want Lena to hear this first."

Alex's expression became serious.

"What happened?"

"We found evidence suggesting the assault wasn't spontaneous."

Alex closed his eyes.

"I figured."

Laura continued.

"We believe they were planning something even worse."

"What kind of something?"

"We're still confirming details."

She hesitated.

"But we're treating this as a conspiracy to murder both Lena and the baby."

Alex leaned against the wall.

Every muscle in his body tensed.

"I want them buried under the prison."

Laura answered calmly.

"If the evidence keeps coming..."

"They will be."

That afternoon, Trent received another visit from his attorney.

The lawyer looked exhausted.

"We have a problem."

Trent laughed bitterly.

"You've said that every day."

"This one's different."

He placed several photographs on the table.

Garage stills.

The meeting.

The map.

The enhanced images.

Trent stared silently.

"You were recorded."

His lawyer folded his hands.

"The prosecution is asking the court to deny bail permanently."

Trent looked up.

"What if I explain?"

The attorney didn't answer.

Because there was nothing left to explain.

Late that evening...

Lena rocked Hope gently in the NICU.

The lights were dim.

Most parents had gone home.

Hope had fallen asleep against her chest.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

Lena allowed herself to imagine the future.

A small house.

Birthday parties.

First steps.

First words.

A life without fear.

She smiled.

"We're going to make it."

Just then, Nurse Emily approached with a concerned expression.

"Lena..."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"There's someone downstairs asking to see you."

Lena frowned.

"Who?"

The nurse glanced toward the hallway.

"He says..."

"...he's your father."

The room fell completely silent.

Lena's smile disappeared.

May you like

Her father had been dead...

For fifteen years.
