Chapter 11 – The Man at the Front Desk

Lena stared at Nurse Emily.
"I... I'm sorry?"
The nurse looked equally confused.
"The man downstairs identified himself as your father."
Lena slowly shook her head.
"My father died when I was twelve."
Emily frowned.
"Then he isn't who he says he is."
Alex, who had just returned with fresh clothes for Lena, immediately noticed the change in her expression.
"What happened?"
Before Lena could answer, Emily repeated what she'd been told.
Alex's face hardened.
"Where is he?"
"Hospital security has him in the main lobby."
"I'll handle it."
Five minutes later, Alex stepped into the hospital lobby.
Two security officers stood beside a gray-haired man in his late sixties.
The man wasn't aggressive.
He looked exhausted.
He wore faded jeans, worn work boots, and a denim jacket that had clearly seen better days.
When he saw Alex, he slowly stood.
"You must be her brother."
Alex didn't answer.
"Who are you?"
The man hesitated.
"My name is Samuel Dawson."
"Then why did you tell the nurse you're Lena's father?"
Samuel lowered his eyes.
"Because..."
"...it's easier than explaining the truth."
Alex folded his arms.
"Try."
Samuel took a deep breath.
"I wasn't her father."
"I was his best friend."
Alex frowned.
"My father's?"
Samuel nodded.
"We served together as volunteer firefighters for almost twenty years."
Alex searched his memory.
A blurry image surfaced.
A tall man laughing beside his father during a neighborhood barbecue.
"You..."
Samuel smiled sadly.
"You remember."
"Just barely."
"I moved to Oregon after your father passed away."
Alex's guard lowered slightly.
"What are you doing here?"
Samuel reached into his jacket pocket.
"I saw the news."
He pulled out an old photograph.
It showed two young men standing beside a fire engine.
One was Alex and Lena's father.
The other...
Samuel.
"He would've wanted me here."
Meanwhile, upstairs...
Detective Laura Kim arrived with another update.
She found Lena sitting beside Hope's incubator.
"Hope looks stronger."
Lena smiled.
"She gained another four ounces."
"That's wonderful."
Laura waited until the nurse stepped away.
"I have news."
Lena's smile faded.
"What kind of news?"
"We searched Trent's office."
Laura opened a file.
"At first, we thought we were looking for financial records."
"But we found something else."
She removed a blue folder.
Across the front, in thick black marker, someone had written:
CUSTODY PLAN
Lena's stomach turned.
Laura carefully opened it.
Inside were legal forms.
Psychological evaluations.
Printed articles.
Highlighted passages.
One page immediately caught Lena's attention.
Emergency Guardianship Petition
The applicant's name:
Helen Carter
Lena's hands began shaking.
"They were serious."
Laura nodded.
"They had already prepared the paperwork."
The folder contained handwritten notes.
"Mother emotionally unstable."
"Possible postpartum depression."
"Recommend psychiatric evaluation."
None of it was true.
Every word had been fabricated.
"They were building a case against you."
Lena whispered,
"They wanted to steal my baby."
Laura answered honestly.
"Yes."
Alex returned to the NICU shortly afterward.
Samuel remained downstairs with hospital security until detectives could verify his identity.
"Everything okay?" Lena asked.
Alex nodded.
"I think so."
"You think?"
"He knew Dad."
Lena looked surprised.
"Samuel Dawson?"
"You remember him?"
Very slowly...
A memory surfaced.
Summer picnics.
A bright red fire truck.
A man who always carried peppermints in his pocket.
"He used to call me Little Lady."
Alex smiled.
"That's him."
An hour later, Detective Laura confirmed Samuel's identity.
Everything checked out.
No criminal record.
No suspicious activity.
Just an old family friend who had driven nearly twelve hours after seeing the news on television.
When Lena finally agreed to meet him, Samuel removed his cap the moment he entered the room.
For a long moment...
Neither spoke.
Then Samuel's eyes filled with tears.
"You look just like your mother."
Lena smiled through her own tears.
"It's been a long time."
"Too long."
He looked toward Hope.
"So that's the little miracle."
Lena nodded.
"Her name is Hope."
Samuel stepped closer to the incubator.
"Your father would've loved that name."
He reached into a small paper bag he'd been carrying.
"I brought something."
Inside was a tiny knitted baby blanket.
Blue and white.
"I didn't make it."
He laughed softly.
"My wife insisted."
Lena gently touched the blanket.
"It's beautiful."
Samuel smiled.
"She said every baby deserves a fresh start."
Just then, Laura's phone rang.
She stepped into the hallway.
"Kim."
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Alex noticed.
"What happened?"
Laura slowly lowered the phone.
"The forensic accountants finished reviewing Trent's finances."
"And?"
Laura looked directly at Lena.
"They discovered someone has been paying Trent..."
She paused.
"...every month for nearly two years."
Lena frowned.
"Who?"
Laura answered quietly.
"A private trust."
Alex narrowed his eyes.
"Owned by..."
Laura opened the report.
Then looked up.
"The trust belongs to someone named..."
Margaret Holloway.
None of them recognized the name.
May you like
But before the day was over...
They would discover that Margaret Holloway had a connection to Lena's past that no one—not even Lena herself—had ever known.
