Chapter 9 – The Doctor's Secret

The name on the computer screen silenced the entire investigation room.

Dr. Michael Reeves.

Lena's obstetrician.

Sheriff Daniel Brooks frowned.

"Run everything."

Detective Laura Kim nodded.

"I want his phone records, his financial records, and every visit he made to the Carter house."

Within minutes, investigators began digging.

No one was accusing the doctor of a crime.

Not yet.

But no one could ignore the fact that his SUV had been outside the house at five o'clock that morning.

Meanwhile, Lena sat beside Hope's incubator.

Hope had been taken off the ventilator for a short trial.

A tiny nasal CPAP now helped her breathe.

Her chest still rose unevenly, but every breath she took on her own felt like a miracle.

Nurse Emily smiled.

"She's stubborn."

Lena laughed softly.

"I've heard that before."

Emily adjusted Hope's blanket.

"That's usually a good quality."

Hope stretched one tiny hand toward the sound of her mother's voice.

Lena slipped a finger into the incubator.

The little hand wrapped around it immediately.

"You know my voice already."

Hope's heart monitor remained steady.

Every beep felt like hope itself.

Alex stepped into the NICU carrying breakfast.

"You forgot to eat again."

"I'm not hungry."

"Lena."

She looked up.

"You need strength."

He handed her a small container of oatmeal.

"For Hope."

That finally worked.

Lena took a few bites.

At the sheriff's office...

Detective Laura received the first report.

Dr. Reeves had visited the Carter residence seven times during Lena's pregnancy.

That wasn't unusual.

High-risk patients occasionally received home visits.

What was unusual...

Every visit had been scheduled by Trent.

Never by Lena.

Laura frowned.

"Did Lena request any of these?"

The hospital administrator checked the records.

"No."

"Most appointments were arranged over the phone."

"By whom?"

"Her husband."

Laura drove straight to Mercy General Hospital.

Dr. Reeves welcomed her into his office.

"I heard about Lena."

His face looked genuinely saddened.

"How is she?"

"Recovering."

Laura sat down.

"I have a few questions."

"Of course."

She placed a photograph of the black SUV on his desk.

"Were you at the Carter residence the morning of the assault?"

Dr. Reeves looked at the picture.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

Laura remained expressionless.

"Tell me why."

The doctor leaned back.

"I received a phone call around four-thirty that morning."

"From Trent."

"He said Lena was having severe abdominal pain and heavy bleeding."

Laura took notes.

"So you went there."

"Immediately."

"What happened?"

Dr. Reeves sighed deeply.

"When I arrived..."

"...nothing made sense."

He remembered every detail.

Trent met him at the front door.

Smiling.

Too calm.

Helen insisted Lena was asleep.

Richard claimed she had exaggerated pregnancy discomfort.

"I asked to examine my patient."

Laura looked up.

"Were you allowed?"

"No."

"They refused."

"What reason did they give?"

"They said she'd finally fallen asleep."

Laura's eyes narrowed.

"What did you do?"

"I argued."

"For nearly ten minutes."

Flashback.

Dr. Reeves stood in the foyer.

"I need to see her."

Trent crossed his arms.

"She's resting."

"I'm her physician."

"Come back later."

The doctor looked toward the staircase.

Something felt wrong.

Then...

He heard it.

A muffled cry.

Barely audible.

A woman's voice.

He stepped forward.

"I heard someone."

Trent blocked his path.

"My wife is sleeping."

The doctor's instincts screamed that something was terribly wrong.

"I told them I'd call the police if they didn't let me examine her."

Laura interrupted.

"Did you?"

Dr. Reeves lowered his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

He looked ashamed.

"They finally agreed to reschedule."

"I believed them."

Laura closed her notebook.

"You left."

"Yes."

"I drove away."

He looked out the office window.

"I'd gone less than two blocks when my office called."

"An emergency patient had arrived."

"I turned toward the hospital."

He closed his eyes.

"I've regretted that decision every hour since."

Laura studied him carefully.

She believed him.

Everything he described fit the timeline.

The SUV leaving.

Alex arriving moments later.

Still...

One question remained.

"Doctor..."

"Did Lena ever tell you she was being abused?"

Silence.

A long silence.

Finally...

He nodded.

"Not with words."

Laura waited.

"Every appointment..."

"...she would look at me as though she wanted to say something."

His voice became quiet.

"But Trent never left the room."

He opened a cabinet.

Inside were Lena's medical records.

Several pages contained handwritten notes.

Bruising inconsistent with explanation.

Patient unusually anxious in husband's presence.

Recommend private consultation—declined by spouse.

Laura looked up sharply.

"You documented your concerns."

"I did."

"Why didn't you report them?"

Pain crossed his face.

"I should have."

Back at the apartment, Lena received another visitor.

Mrs. Evelyn Brooks.

The elderly neighbor held a small box wrapped in blue paper.

"I thought this belonged to you."

Lena opened it.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Pictures taken from across the street over the years.

Not secretly.

Just ordinary neighborhood photos.

Christmas decorations.

Snowstorms.

Community barbecues.

But in nearly every picture...

Lena appeared in the background.

Wearing long sleeves in summer.

Looking thinner each year.

Standing alone.

Mrs. Brooks gently touched her hand.

"I wanted to come over so many times."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I was afraid I'd make things worse."

Lena hugged the elderly woman.

"You came now."

Mrs. Brooks smiled sadly.

"I wish I'd come sooner."

That evening, Detective Laura received a call from the forensic lab.

"Ethan here."

"We found something."

Laura grabbed her keys.

"What is it?"

"It's from the hidden camera system."

"What about it?"

"There was one camera..."

He paused.

"...that none of us noticed before."

Laura frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It wasn't inside the house."

"It was hidden..."

"...inside the garage."

Laura's heartbeat quickened.

"What does it show?"

Ethan answered quietly.

May you like

"The night before the assault."

"And you're going to want to see who's in that video."
