Chapter 5 – The Investigation Begins

Three days passed.

Hope remained in the NICU, surrounded by a maze of tubes and softly blinking monitors. Every morning, Lena insisted on being wheeled to her daughter's incubator before breakfast. Every night, she refused to leave until a nurse gently reminded her that she needed to recover, too.

Hope was still on a ventilator.

Still fragile.

Still fighting.

And every time Lena slipped a finger into the incubator, Hope's tiny hand curled around it.

It became their ritual.

Their promise.

On the fourth morning, Detective Laura Kim knocked softly on Lena's hospital room door.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Lena looked up from the hospital bed.

"You can call me Lena."

Laura smiled faintly.

"Only if you call me Laura."

Alex stood by the window, arms folded. The detective waited until he nodded before stepping inside.

"I know this isn't easy," Laura began, taking a seat. "But we're ready to take your formal statement."

Lena's fingers tightened around the blanket.

She had spent years pretending everything was fine.

Years making excuses.

Years hiding bruises beneath long sleeves.

Now she had to tell the truth.

Every painful piece of it.

Laura switched on a digital recorder.

"For the record, today's date is June 14th. Present are Detective Laura Kim, Ms. Lena Carter, and her brother, Mr. Alex Carter."

She looked gently at Lena.

"When did the abuse begin?"

Lena stared at the floor.

"It started six months after our wedding."

Flashbacks flooded her mind.

The first slap.

Trent had apologized afterward.

He brought flowers.

He cried.

He promised it would never happen again.

She believed him.

Then came another slap.

Then pushing.

Then kicking.

Eventually...

Apologies disappeared.

Violence became normal.

"When did his parents become involved?" Laura asked.

Lena closed her eyes.

"They never stopped him."

She swallowed.

"They encouraged him."

Laura remained silent, allowing her to continue.

"Helen called discipline."

"Richard said I deserved it."

"Nicole..."

Lena hesitated.

"...Nicole recorded everything."

Alex's jaw tightened.

Laura nodded slowly.

"We've recovered those videos."

Lena looked up in surprise.

"You have them?"

"Every single one."

Laura opened a folder.

"There are forty-three videos."

Lena's face drained of color.

"Forty-three?"

"Some are only a few seconds."

She paused.

"Others lasted more than twenty minutes."

Alex clenched his fists.

Laura continued carefully.

"We also recovered text messages."

She slid printed pages across the bed.

Lena recognized Helen's number immediately.

One message read:

She needs another lesson. She's becoming too independent.

Another:

Don't let her visit her brother this weekend.

Another:

Break her spirit now before the baby makes her think she's important.

Lena burst into tears.

She had never seen those messages before.

They hadn't simply hated her.

They had planned it together.

Across town...

The district attorney's office buzzed with activity.

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Monroe spread photographs across a conference table.

Medical reports.

Crime-scene photos.

Digital evidence.

She looked at Sheriff Brooks.

"This isn't just aggravated assault."

Brooks nodded.

"No."

Rachel tapped the medical records.

"This is years of systematic abuse."

She picked up another file.

"And because the victim was pregnant..."

She let the sentence hang.

Brooks understood.

"The charges will increase."

Rachel looked directly at him.

"I'm charging all four."

At the county jail, Trent met with his attorney again.

The lawyer didn't bother sitting down.

"You've been formally charged."

"What charges?"

The attorney read directly from the paperwork.

"Attempted murder."

Trent laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous."

"Aggravated domestic battery."

His smile faded.

"Unlawful imprisonment."

He shifted in his chair.

"Witness intimidation."

His breathing became uneven.

"Assault on an unborn child."

Silence.

Then one final charge.

"Conspiracy."

Trent stared blankly.

"What about my parents?"

The attorney looked him in the eyes.

"They've been charged too."

Helen nearly fainted when she heard the news.

"What do you mean conspiracy?"

The prosecutor answered calmly.

"The abuse appears to have been coordinated."

"I never touched her!"

"No."

The prosecutor slid a tablet across the table.

"But you repeatedly instructed someone else to."

Helen's own voice filled the room once again.

"Hit her again."

Helen looked away.

For the first time in decades...

She realized she couldn't talk her way out.

That evening, Lena finally left her hospital room without a wheelchair.

The steps were slow.

Painful.

But they were hers.

Alex walked beside her.

"You don't have to rush."

"I'm not."

She smiled weakly.

"I'm walking toward Hope."

Inside the NICU, Nurse Emily adjusted one of the monitors.

"Good timing," she whispered.

"She was just awake."

Hope's tiny eyes fluttered open.

They were dark blue.

Too young to reveal their permanent color.

Lena leaned closer.

"Hi, sweetheart."

Hope moved her tiny fingers.

The monitor showed a steady heartbeat.

Stronger than yesterday.

Nurse Emily smiled.

"She's making progress."

Alex looked through the incubator window.

"She's stubborn."

Lena laughed softly.

"She gets that from me."

As they stood together, a doctor entered the NICU carrying new test results.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Lena turned.

"We've completed Hope's latest scans."

Her smile faded.

"Is something wrong?"

The doctor hesitated just long enough to make Alex's stomach tighten.

"There is... something we'd like to monitor."

Lena's heart skipped a beat.

"What is it?"

The doctor took a careful breath.

"The trauma before delivery may have affected Hope's brain."

Silence settled over the room.

"But," the doctor quickly added, "it's far too early to know the extent."

Lena looked at her tiny daughter, who had survived impossible odds.

She gently touched Hope's tiny hand through the incubator opening.

"No matter what happens," she whispered, tears filling her eyes, "we'll face it together."

Across the room, Alex silently made another promise.

This time, not only to protect his sister—

But to make sure the people who had nearly destroyed her family never walked free again.
