Chapter 39 - The Golden Beacon

Instantly, the white wooden lantern hanging proudly beside the front door burst into brilliant, golden life. Its warm radiance spilled across the porch steps, washing over the railing and the emerging spring grass, cutting a clean, safe circle into the advancing dark of the late March night.

Noah pressed his face against the glass sidelight, watching the glow illuminate the yard. "It's working, Mommy. The dark can't get past the porch now."

"Never," Sarah agreed, resting her palm flat against the smooth wooden door frame, feeling the solid, living architecture of the bungalow pulse softly beneath her hand.

She didn't need to be a superhero carrying the crushing weight of the world. She didn't need validation from the people who had tried to break her, nor did she need to look backward into the funhouse mirrors of her past. She was simply a mother, a keeper of the fire, a woman who had mastered the art of turning on the light so the shadows would never find a place to hide.

The front door was securely shut, the heavy brass deadbolt thrown firmly into its housing. Outside, the wind brushed against the glass of the lantern, but the bulb remained steady, brilliant, and completely unbreakable. It was her grandfather's legacy, preserved by her father, and sustained by her own hands.

She looked down at Noah, who was now gazing up at her with complete, unreserved adoration. She scooped him up into her arms, holding him tightly against her chest as he wrapped his arms around her neck. They stood together in the center of the warm, bright hallway, surrounded by a peace that no amount of chaos in the outside world could ever touch.
