Chapter 44 - The Evening Ritual

As the clock on the mantel ticked past five, the sky outside the kitchen window bruised into a brilliant tapestry of violet, amber, and deep indigo. The spring day was surrendering gracefully to the evening, drawing a cool, velvety curtain across the horizon.

Noah stirred on the sofa, stretching his arms toward the ceiling and emitting a tremendous, theatrical yawn before padding into the kitchen on quiet feet.

"Is mission control ready for dinner, Commander?" he asked sleepily, leaning against Sarah's knee.

"Dinner is prepped and waiting, Captain," Sarah smiled, lifting him up for a quick, affectionate squeeze before setting him down at the low table. "Tonight we have roasted sweet potatoes and chicken strips—fuel approved by the highest levels of the space agency."

They ate in the comfortable, companionable quiet that had become the hallmark of their evenings. There were no eggshells to walk on, no sudden shifts in emotional weather to monitor. Just the warm clink of silverware, the steady hum of the refrigerator, and the easy flow of imaginative conversation about whether space dolphins could swim through nebula clouds.

When dinner concluded and the dishes were cleared, the true magic of the evening began. The sky outside had darkened to a deep, starry purple.

"Mommy, it's time," Noah whispered, his eyes gleaming with excitement as he grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the front hallway. "The lantern needs to wake up."

Sarah allowed herself to be pulled, her heart full to bursting. Together, they walked to the heavy front door. Noah stood on tiptoe, his small fingers reaching for the wall switch, while Sarah placed her hand gently over his to guide the toggle upward.
