Chapter 40 - The Eternal Cadence

Later that night, after Noah had been safely tucked into bed with Barnaby tucked under his arm, and after his steady, rhythmic breathing had filled his room with the quiet music of sleep, Sarah walked back out to the living room.

The house was entirely still. The lamps cast a soft, amber glow across the bookshelves and the plush rug. Through the front window, she could still see the golden halo of the porch lantern, burning steadfastly against the midnight chill.

Sarah walked over to the front hallway and touched the cold metal of the deadbolt one last time before bed. It was secure. The perimeter was held. Her life was entirely her own, built from the ground up with truth, boundaries, and uncompromising love.

The calendar had turned over, marking the dawn of a new season, but inside the bungalow, time was no longer a race against a frantic clock. It had transformed into a rhythm—a steady, beautiful cadence of shared meals, echoes of laughter down the hallway, quiet footsteps on warm cork floors, and the soft, eternal glow of a lantern cutting through the dark.

She smiled to herself, her heart entirely at peace, and walked down the hall toward her room, ready to embrace whatever tomorrow's light would bring.
