Instantly, the white wooden lantern hanging beside the front door flooded the porch with a brilliant, golden radiance. It pushed back the encroaching chill and darkness of the April night, casting a safe, comforting circle of light across the steps, the railing, and the newly planted sunflower seeds resting in the earth below.
Noah pressed his face against the glass sidelight, watching the glow settle over the yard. "It's shining, Mommy. The dark can't touch it."
"Never," Sarah murmured, resting her palm flat against the smooth wooden door frame. She felt the solid, living architecture of the bungalow pulse gently beneath her hand—a house built by her grandfather, preserved by her father, and kept burning by her own hands.
It wasn't a contract with a liar. It wasn't a lighthouse keeper's false promise luring ships onto jagged rocks. It was her light.
