Chapter 5 - The Legal War Begins

Sarah Vance's office was exactly what I needed it to be: cold, professional, and intimidating. Located on the top floor of a glass skyscraper, it overlooked the city like a fortress. Sarah herself was a sharp-featured woman in her late forties with silver-streaked hair and an aura of absolute competence.

She listened to my story without interrupting, her pen moving rhythmically across a yellow legal pad as I detailed the events of the morning, the financial discrepancies, and Noah’s account of being dismissed by Marcus.

When I finished, she set her pen down and folded her hands.

"First of all, Elena, I am deeply sorry," Sarah said, her tone professional yet genuinely empathetic. "What your husband and sister did is abominable. But from a legal standpoint, you have handed me an incredibly strong hand. The fact that your son was left unattended in a freezing house while your husband was engaging in an extramarital affair is a massive leverage point for custody."

"I want sole legal and physical custody," I said, my voice unwavering. "Marcus proved last night that his priorities do not include our son's safety. He left a five-year-old on a tile floor in November. He doesn't get unsupervised visits. Not now, not ever."

"We will file an emergency motion for temporary sole custody first thing tomorrow morning," Sarah nodded. "Along with a temporary restraining order restricting him from the marital home. Since you are the primary earner and have a stable job, and given the documentation of neglect, the judge will almost certainly grant it. We will also freeze the joint accounts to prevent him from draining any more assets."

"What about the financial records?" I asked, sliding the printed bank statements across her desk. "He’s been using our joint funds to pay for hotels, dinners, and jewelry for my sister."

Sarah glanced over the pages, a grim smile touching her lips. "This is excellent. In this state, we can claim dissipation of marital assets. Every dollar he spent on his mistress—even if she is your sister—will be credited back to you in the final property division. We will subpoena his personal phone records, his text messages, and his email accounts. We will paint a picture of a man who completely abandoned his marital and parental duties."

As we were finalizing the paperwork, my phone began to vibrate violently in my purse. I pulled it out. It was my mother.

"Don't answer it," Sarah advised softly. "Not yet. The family dynamic is going to get very complicated, very quickly. You need to be prepared for the fallout."

I ignored the advice. I needed to know where my family stood. I pressed the accept button and put the phone to my ear.

"Elena!" my mother's voice boomed through the speaker, hysterical and breathless. "Thank God you answered! Diane just came to the house completely distraught. She said you're threatening to call the police on her? She said there was a horrible misunderstanding last night! Elena, she’s your sister! You can't ruin her life over a mistake!"

The final thread of hope I held for my family snapped cleanly in two.

"A mistake, Mom?" I said, my voice shockingly calm. "She was in my bed with my husband while my son was freezing on the floor. If you think that’s a mistake, then you can stay out of my life along with her."

I hung up the phone before she could reply, turning it completely off. The war had officially begun.
