Chapter 11 - THE SIEGE OF THE FORTRESS

The wooden front doors exploded inward as Moretti's men kicked them off their hinges.
Carmine and Marco immediately opened fire from behind the heavy stone kitchen island, driving the invaders back into the snow.
Muzzle flashes illuminated the pitch-black living room in violent, flickering yellow bursts.
I crouched low, firing two shots toward a shadow breaching the side window, hearing a groan as the man fell back outside.
"Good girl!" Carmine shouted over the deafening roar of gunshots, pulling me closer to him behind cover.
The siege was relentless, but the stone walls of the fortress held off the heavy fire from the outside.
Carmine moved like a phantom through the dark house, dropping enemy after enemy with precise, lethal shots.
He was an absolute force of nature, protecting every inch of the space where I stood.
Within twenty minutes, the gunfire outside began to die down as DeLuca reinforcements finally arrived up the mountain road.
The snow outside was stained bright red as Moretti's remaining men threw down their weapons and surrendered to Marco.
Carmine walked out onto the front porch, the freezing mountain air blowing his dark hair across his forehead.
He looked down at the surviving hitmen, then turned back to face me in the doorway.
