Chapter 5 - THE CHARITY GALA

Two weeks later, Carmine ordered me to accompany him to the annual Boise Business Gala.
It was a high-society event packed with politicians, wealthy real estate moguls, and undercover mobsters.
I wore a sleek black floor-length gown that covered the lingering faded mark on my throat.
Carmine walked beside me, his hand resting securely on the small of my back as we navigated the crowded ballroom.
People stared at us, whispering behind their champagne glasses, shocked to see the terrifying mafia boss with an unknown woman.
"Stay close to me, Ivy," Carmine instructed smoothly as he greeted a local judge with a firm handshake.
Suddenly, the atmosphere in the room shifted, turning ice-cold as an older man with gray hair stepped into the light.
It was Don Salvatore Moretti, flanked by four heavily armed bodyguards in dark suits.
Moretti smiled, a cruel, predatory grin that didn't reach his cold blue eyes.
"Carmine," Moretti sneered, stepping closer. "I noticed one of my favorite earners went missing recently."
"Trash gets thrown out, Salvatore," Carmine replied effortlessly, not dropping his calm composure for a single second.
Moretti's eyes shifted onto me, scanning my face before settling on my neck.
"Ah, so this is the little maid who caused all the mess," Moretti chuckled darkly. "She looks fragile, Carmine."
Carmine took a step forward, completely shielding me with his broad frame, his voice dropping an octave.
