Chapter 6 - THE AMBUSH

The drive back from the gala was quiet and tense, the rain pouring heavily against the tinted glass of the limousine.
Gianni was driving, while Carmine and I sat across from each other in the dark back passenger compartment.
"Moretti won't let this go," I said, clutching my small clutch purse tightly in my lap.
"Neither will I," Carmine answered calmly, pouring two fingers of bourbon into a crystal glass.
Suddenly, a loud screech of tires echoed through the rainy night, followed by a violent metal crunch.
A heavy black SUV smashed directly into the side of our limousine, sending us spinning across the wet asphalt.
My head slammed against the window, and dark spots danced across my vision as the car came to a dead stop.
Outside, automatic gunfire immediately shattered the silence, bullets riddling the reinforced steel doors.
"Stay down!" Carmine roared, throwing his body over mine to pin me safely to the floorboard.
I could hear Gianni returning fire through the driver's partition with a heavy shotgun.
Carmine reached into his jacket, pulled a sleek black handgun from his holster, and racked the slide.
"Carmine, don't!" I screamed over the deafening noise of shattering glass and engine roars.
He looked down at me, his face calm, eyes burning with a terrifying white-hot fury.

"I promised you protection, Ivy," he said, kissing my forehead softly before kicking the car door open into the storm.
