Chapter 12 - SHOWDOWN AT THE DOCK

The final confrontation took place at an abandoned grain silo complex near the Snake River at midnight.
Don Salvatore Moretti was trying to flee the state in a private boat, packed with bags of cash and stolen passports.
Carmine and I arrived with a fleet of dark SUVs, surrounding the docks before Moretti's boat could launch.
Moretti stood on the wooden pier, surrounded by his last two panicked bodyguards, holding a briefcase tight to his chest.
"Carmine!" Moretti screamed into the cold night wind. "We can make a deal! Half my territory is yours!"
Carmine stepped out of the lead vehicle, walking slowly down the creaking wooden pier toward his rival.
I followed three paces behind him, wearing a thick wool coat, holding my small pistol firmly inside my pocket.
"You broke the code, Salvatore," Carmine said, his voice echoing over the rushing dark waters of the river. "You attacked my home, and you targeted my woman."
"She's a servant!" Moretti yelled hysterically, backing up toward the edge of the dark water. "She's nothing!"
Carmine raised his gun without another word and shot both of Moretti's bodyguards before they could even draw their weapons.
They fell splashing into the freezing river below, leaving Moretti standing entirely alone and terrified.

Carmine stopped two feet away from the shaking old mobster, his eyes cold as ice.
