Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything

Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything

The gun looked enormous in Daniel's hand.

For a split second, nobody moved.

Then Evelyn shoved me sideways.

The deafening gunshot exploded through the basement.

Concrete chips burst from the wall where my head had been.

"Run!" Evelyn screamed.

We sprinted through the narrow storage room as another shot echoed behind us.

Boxes crashed to the floor.

Dust filled the air.

Daniel was coming.

Fast.

At the back of the room, Evelyn pulled aside an old tarp, revealing a hidden tunnel barely wide enough to crawl through.

"I built this after my second escape attempt," she whispered.

"You've escaped before?"

"I tried."

Her voice broke.

"He always found me."

We crawled through the tunnel while Daniel tore apart the storage room behind us.

The beam of his flashlight swept across the darkness.

"I know where it leads!" he shouted.

"There's nowhere left to hide!"

The tunnel opened into an abandoned storm cellar behind the property.

Fresh air hit my face.

For the first time in weeks, I felt hope.

But it lasted only seconds.

Rachel was waiting outside.

She stood beside Daniel's SUV, blocking the path.

"You should've stayed asleep," she said coldly.

She raised a canister of pepper spray.

Before she could use it, flashing red and blue lights flooded the trees.

Police cars raced down the gravel driveway.

Rachel froze.

Daniel burst out of the cellar behind us.

"Officer!" he shouted instantly, pointing at me.

"My wife is mentally unstable!"

"She's kidnapped this woman from a treatment facility!"

Two officers looked uncertain.

Daniel sounded convincing.

He always did.

Then I remembered the pill.

The tissue was still inside my pocket.

With shaking hands, I pulled it out.

"He gives me these every night."

One officer took the pill.

Another stepped toward Daniel.

"Sir, do you have a prescription?"

Daniel hesitated.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Then my phone buzzed.

A notification.

Earlier that night, when I'd sent my location to Megan, my phone had also uploaded an audio recording to cloud storage.

Without realizing it, I had left the voice recorder running.

Every whisper.

Every confession.

Every word about drugging me.

Every plan to force me into a psychiatric clinic.

Every discussion about stealing my house.

Everything.

The recording had automatically been shared with Megan.

And at that exact moment...

She arrived.

Holding printed transcripts.

Alongside my attorney.

And a judge's emergency warrant authorizing police to seize every document inside the house.

Daniel's confident smile disappeared.

For the first time since I had known him...

He looked afraid.
