Chapter 5: The Secret Room Behind the Wall

Chapter 5: The Secret Room Behind the Wall
Daniel's face turned ghostly pale as my attorney handed the officers the emergency warrant.
"Search every room," the lead detective ordered.
"You can't do that!" Daniel snapped, taking a step backward. "This is my home."
I found my voice.
"No," I said quietly. "It was never yours."
The officers separated Daniel and Rachel, placing them in handcuffs while detectives began photographing every corner of the house.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
The bedrooms.
The kitchen.
The office.
Everything looked exactly as it had for years.
Then one detective stopped in front of the basement storage room.
"Something's wrong here."
He tapped the concrete wall with his flashlight.
Solid.
Solid.
Then—
Hollow.
Everyone turned.
The detective ran his hand across the wall until he found tiny scratches around a section of shelving.
"Move these boxes."
Within minutes, the shelves were pulled away.
Behind them was a steel door hidden inside the concrete.
The same color as the wall.
Nearly invisible.
One officer forced it open.
The smell that escaped made everyone step back.
Inside was a windowless room.
A single bed.
Leather restraints bolted to a metal frame.
Shelves lined with prescription bottles.
Disposable syringes.
Medical gloves.
A video camera mounted in one corner.
And hundreds of labeled folders stacked inside metal cabinets.
The silence was unbearable.
A forensic investigator carefully opened the first folder.
My name.
Every medical appointment I'd attended during the past year.
Blood test results.
Copies of my signature.
Practice sheets where someone had forged my handwriting over and over again.
The second folder belonged to Evelyn.
The third belonged to another woman named Sophia.
Then another.
And another.
Seven women.
Seven complete files.
Each one containing forged psychiatric evaluations, fake medication schedules, financial records, and carefully prepared petitions declaring them mentally incompetent.
Rachel lowered her head.
She knew exactly what that room was.
One detective turned toward Daniel.
"How long has this been going on?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he smiled.
It wasn't the smile of a frightened man.
It was the smile of someone who believed he still couldn't lose.
"You've only found the paperwork," he said calmly.
"You still have no idea who helped me."
The room fell silent.
Even Rachel looked up in shock.
"What do you mean?" she whispered.
Daniel laughed.
"A plan this perfect doesn't happen with only two people."

Every person in that basement suddenly wondered the same terrifying question.
Who else was involved?
