Chapter 7: The Mastermind Steps Into the Light

Chapter 7: The Mastermind Steps Into the Light

The entire room fell silent as the detective held up the flash drive.

No fingerprints.

No return address.

Just six chilling words.

You arrested the wrong mastermind.

The drive was connected to a secure computer while everyone watched.

A single video file appeared.

The timestamp was from eight years earlier.

The screen flickered to life.

Daniel sat at a conference table, younger but unmistakable.

Across from him sat Rachel.

Beside her was Margaret Collins.

Then a fourth person walked into frame.

I stopped breathing.

My mother.

She smiled as she took the empty chair.

"No..." I whispered.

The detective paused the video.

"Do you know this meeting?"

I shook my head, tears filling my eyes.

On the recording, Margaret spread several property files across the table.

"The inheritance is larger than expected," she said.

"If Emily marries Daniel, everything becomes much easier."

Rachel laughed.

"She'll never suspect family."

Then my mother spoke.

"She trusts me completely."

Daniel leaned forward.

"So the plan stays the same."

Margaret nodded.

"We isolate her."

"We convince everyone she's emotionally unstable."

"When the time comes, she'll either sign everything voluntarily..."

She looked directly at Daniel.

"...or she'll be declared incompetent."

The room fell silent.

Eight years.

Eight years before I had even met Daniel.

My marriage had never been a love story.

It had been an investment.

Every birthday.

Every anniversary.

Every vacation photo.

Every "I love you."

Every memory I treasured.

Had been carefully manufactured.

The detective quietly closed the laptop.

"We're issuing a warrant for your mother's arrest."

May you like

I couldn't answer.

Some betrayals were too deep for words.
