Chapter 6: The Betrayal No One Saw Coming

The investigation expanded overnight.

Detectives seized computers, phones, bank records, and every hard drive in the house.

By morning, the evidence filled an entire conference room at the police station.

I sat beside Evelyn, wrapped in a blanket, watching investigators connect photographs across a giant evidence board.

Properties.

Bank accounts.

Insurance policies.

Medical records.

Every line pointed back to Daniel.

Until one detective received a phone call.

His expression changed immediately.

"What is it?" his partner asked.

"The financial transfers."

"What about them?"

"They weren't approved by Daniel."

The room went quiet.

"They were approved by a licensed attorney."

My attorney frowned.

"That's impossible."

The detective slowly placed a photograph on the table.

I stared at it.

My stomach dropped.

It was Margaret Collins.

My father's attorney.

The same woman who had handled my inheritance after his death.

The same woman who had hugged me at the funeral and promised, "Your father trusted me. I'll always protect you."

"No..." I whispered.

"It can't be."

The detective nodded grimly.

"Every forged transfer passed through her office."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I knew there had to be someone on the inside."

Hours later, officers arrived at Margaret's law firm with a search warrant.

They expected resistance.

Instead, they found empty filing cabinets.

Computers wiped clean.

The receptionist in tears.

"She left before sunrise," the woman said.

"She said she had an overseas conference."

"But she never packed any luggage."

Another detective rushed into the room.

"We've tracked a wire transfer."

"How much?"

"Almost fourteen million dollars."

"Destination?"

"A private account in the Cayman Islands."

Daniel hadn't been working alone.

And now his most powerful accomplice had disappeared.

Just as investigators began preparing an international alert, another officer walked into the station carrying a small sealed envelope.

"It was delivered anonymously."

Inside was a single flash drive.

No note.

No fingerprints.
