Chapter 1

My husband yanked the front door open and gestured toward the icy darkness.

“Get out.”

I gazed at him, still dressed in my wedding gown.

“Daniel, it’s our wedding night.”“I don’t care. You disrespected my mother.”

His mother, Evelyn, stood behind him with her arms folded.

All I had done was tell her she couldn’t move our bedroom furniture without consulting me.

But Evelyn had twisted it into a  family betrayal.

“She needs to know her place,” she said sharply.

Daniel nodded.

Then he snatched my coat and threw it onto the porch.

“Stay somewhere else tonight. Maybe you’ll reconsider what you said.”

The door slammed.

I remained there in the freezing night, staring at the house where I had imagined spending my first night as a wife.

My fingers were trembling.

I knocked once.

“Daniel, please.”

Nothing.

I called him.

May you like

Straight to voicemail.

I sank onto the porch steps, pulled my thin coat around myself, and struggled not to cry.
