Chapter 5

Someone had arranged something long before I ever walked down the aisle.Daniel looked at me, horrified.

“I swear, I didn’t know.”

I stepped backward.

“Then find out.”

Because the last document inside that box contained a signature that could change everything.

Daniel stared at the final document.

His fingers were trembling.

“What is this?”

I moved closer.

It was a copy of a legal agreement prepared months before our wedding.

At the top appeared the name of Evelyn’s attorney.

Underneath was a list of conditions concerning the house.

And one sentence stood out:

If Daniel married without a prenuptial agreement approved by Evelyn, ownership of certain  family assets could be challenged.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You wanted her to sign something?”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I wanted to protect the family.”

“You wanted to control my marriage.”

“That isn’t what happened.”

“That is exactly what happened!”

His voice rang through the house.

For the first time, I watched Daniel become angry at someone besides me.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what your father did to me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. I understand that you spent years convincing me I needed to protect you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I raised you alone.”

“And I’m grateful.”

“Then why are you doing this?”
