Chapter 4

“You told me Grandma gave you this house.”Evelyn stayed silent.
Daniel’s voice grew louder.
“You said you purchased it yourself.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
She finally burst out.
“From your father!”
Silence.
I glanced at Ryan.
Neither of us had expected that.
Evelyn confessed that years earlier, the house had been transferred into a family trust following a complicated divorce.
Daniel’s father had kept an interest.
But there was more.
The box held correspondence showing that Evelyn had been pressuring Daniel to keep the house under her control.
She had convinced him that marrying me would en.dan.ger her security.
And Daniel had trusted her.
But then I spotted one document near the bottom.
It wasn’t about the house.
It concerned me.
My name appeared on a legal agreement.
I stared at Daniel.
“Why is my name on that?”
He couldn’t respond.
Evelyn suddenly reached toward the paper.
Ryan stopped her.
Daniel read it.
His expression shifted completely.
“You knew about this before our wedding?”
May you like
Evelyn turned away.
And that was when I understood the freezing night wasn’t the true betrayal.
