Chapter 6

“Because gratitude doesn’t mean I need to destr0y my marriage for you.”I remained quiet.

This wasn’t the explosive confrontation I had imagined.

It was something more pa!nful.

A son discovering that the person he trusted most had been manipulating his fears.

Ryan opened another folder.

“This is what the box was actually about.”

Daniel looked at him.

Ryan explained that the documents had come from an attorney who once represented Daniel’s late grandfather.

Months earlier, the attorney had uncovered inconsistencies in the property records.

He had forwarded copies to Daniel’s father.

But Daniel’s father had never delivered them.

Instead, following his de:ath, the documents were passed to Ryan through a family contact who knew Ryan was Daniel’s brother-in-law.

The box had remained in storage.

Ryan had only received it the previous day.

He hadn’t known what was inside until he opened the first folder.

I looked at Daniel.

“So you didn’t send it?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Ryan shook his head.

“We don’t know.”

That mystery was eventually answered.

The attorney had mailed a duplicate packet to Daniel’s new address—the address of the house where we had just gotten married.
