Chapter 1 - THE BIRTHDAY DINNER

By the time dessert arrived, I already realized I had made a mistake inviting Daniel’s family to dinner.

I had reserved a private room at a steakhouse in Columbus, Ohio, for my daughter Lily’s eighth birthday.

I paid the deposit, ordered the cake, and covered the entire bill because Daniel had been without work for two months.

I did not mind paying.

What bothered me was watching my mother-in-law, Carol, treat my wallet like a shared family resource.

The server had barely cleared the plates when Carol began stacking untouched rolls, sliced steak, roasted vegetables, and half the birthday cake into takeout boxes.

“Leave some for us,” I said. “Lily asked to have cake tomorrow.”

Carol did not even glance at me. “You have enough food at home.”

“I paid for this dinner.”

That made her turn.

“So now you’re keeping score?”

Daniel stared at his phone. His sister, Megan, smirked.

I reached toward the cake box. “I said leave it.”

Carol pressed her palm against the table and lifted her hand toward me, fingers spread, in a gesture that immediately made me uncomfortable. Her expression changed completely.

“Don’t you dare embarrass me in front of my family.”

The room became silent.

Lily froze beside me.

That was the moment I stopped arguing.

I took the box from Carol, walked toward the trash can near the service station, and emptied the remaining cake and food into it. Gasps followed me.

“There,” I said. “Now nobody takes it.”

Daniel finally stood. “Rachel, what the hell is wrong with you?”

I picked up Lily’s coat.

“What’s wrong is that your mother just made a thre:atening gesture toward me, and you watched.”

Carol shouted that I was dramatic. Megan called me selfish. Daniel told me to sit down.

May you like

I did not.

I took Lily, drove home, packed two overnight bags, and stayed with my friend Jenna.
