Chapter 10 - WHAT THE RECEIPT MEANT

Later that night, after Lily went to bed, I found the old steakhouse receipt inside a folder with the divorce paperwork.

I had kept it because Melissa once advised me to keep anything connected to the timeline.

The total was $612.47.

For months, that number had bothered me. I had paid more than six hundred dollars for a birthday dinner that ended with my daughter upset, my marriage unraveling, and most of the food in a trash can.

But the receipt eventually came to represent something different.

It marked the final night I let peace at the table matter more than what was actually happening around the table.

People still had opinions about what I did.

Even Jenna admitted she would not have thrown the food away.

She said she would have taken the boxes herself and left.

Maybe that would have been calmer.

Maybe throwing everything away was impulsive.

I can acknowledge that.

But the food was never the choice that changed my life.

Leaving was.

Answering the bank truthfully was.

Checking the account was.

Freezing my credit was.

Refusing to guarantee a debt I had never agreed to carry was.

The hardest part was not discovering that Daniel had used my information.

It was realizing that he viewed my consent as an obstacle to work around rather than a boundary to respect.

Once I understood that, everything else became paperwork.
