Chapter 4 - THE PORCH CONFRONTATION

That evening he arrived at Jenna’s house.

I saw him through the front window before he knocked. He looked exhausted, still wearing the same gray jacket he had worn to Lily’s birthday dinner.

Jenna asked whether I wanted her to turn him away.

“No,” I said. “But stay nearby.”

I stepped onto the porch and shut the door behind me.

Daniel immediately started talking about Megan.

He said she would lose the lease. He said Carol could lose the fifteen thousand dollars she had invested. He said Megan had already told people she was opening the salon and would be em.bar.ras.sed if it collapsed.

I listened until he finished talking.

Then I asked, “When were you going to tell me about the sixty-five hundred?”

He rubbed his forehead. “I was going to put it back.”

“With what money?”

“I’m interviewing.”

“That is not money.”

He looked toward the street.

Then I asked about the online lender.

His expression shifted.

That gave me my answer before he spoke.

He admitted he had started another application using my income because he wanted to see what amount we might qualify for. He insisted he had stopped it before submitting the final paperwork.

“You used my information twice?”

“I didn’t sign your name.”

“You keep saying that like it makes this normal.”

“I was trying to fix things.”

“For Megan?”

“For all of us.”

I stared at him.

“How does putting forty-eight thousand dollars of her business debt on me fix anything for Lily and me?”

He had no response.

Then he said something I would remember for years.

“Mom said you’d say no if we asked first.”

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding. Not hurried paperwork. Not a confused conversation where everyone believed I had agreed.

They had anticipated my refusal and decided to move ahead before I could give it.

I opened the door.

“You need to leave.”

“Rachel, come on.”

“You need to leave.”

He stepped closer, not threatening me, but trying to lower his voice into that calm, private tone he used whenever he wanted me to question whether I was being unreasonable.

“We can solve this. Tell the bank you’re willing to reconsider. Megan can refinance you off later.”

“No.”

“You don’t even know the business plan.”

“No.”

“Can you stop saying no for five seconds?”

“No.”

Jenna opened the door behind me.

Daniel looked at her, then back toward me.

He left.
