Chapter 8 - THE DIVORCE

I filed for divorce the following month.
There was no dramatic courtroom battle. No secret fortune appeared. No one was taken away in handcuffs.
There were forms, financial disclosures, parenting schedules, attorney invoices, and difficult conversations inside plain conference rooms.
Daniel did not dispute that the $6,500 belonged back in the marital account. Since it had already been returned, that issue disappeared quickly. The bank records and emails mattered mostly because they explained why I insisted on clear financial separation during the case.
Carol stopped contacting me directly after Melissa sent a written request that communication regarding Lily go through Daniel.
Megan blocked me everywhere.
For a while, Daniel blamed me for the salon.
Then, several months into the divorce, something changed.
He called one evening after dropping Lily off.
“I found out Megan had another investor,” he said.
I waited.
“She never told me.”
The investor had promised ten thousand dollars, then backed out before the lease was signed. Megan signed anyway because she assumed Daniel would cover the difference.
Just as Daniel had assumed I would cover his.
Just as Carol had assumed she could take most of the birthday dinner because I had paid for it.
Different amounts. Same pattern.
Take first.
Explain later.
Call resistance selfish.
Daniel sounded surprised by the realization, but I was no longer waiting for him to understand before trusting my own judgment.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
It was the first apology he had offered me without attaching the word “but.”

I believed he meant it.
I also knew an apology could not rebuild what had been broken.
