PART 17: THE FEDERAL SENTENCING

PART 17: THE FEDERAL SENTENCING
The grand ceremonial courtroom of the Cook County District Court was packed to capacity with corporate executives, society representatives, and international journalists when the final sentencing hour initialized.
Marco and Teresa stood side-by-side at the defense table, both wearing simple, dark institutional blazers, their heads bowed as the chief judge reviewed the massive compilation of forensic data.
The judge slammed her gavel down with a thunderous CRACK that made the high stone walls echo with the sound of finality.
"In my twenty-five years on this federal bench," the judge declared, her eyes locked onto the defendants with absolute, unyielding disgust, "I have rarely seen a more calculated display of domestic exploitation and systemic fraud. Marco Callahan, you are hereby sentenced to seven years in a federal correctional facility for grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement."
A sharp, broken sob escaped Elena’s lips from the back row as the judge turned her gaze toward Teresa.

"Teresa Callahan, for your role in wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion, you are sentenced to five years with zero eligibility for early administrative release."
The bailiffs stepped forward smoothly, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around both of their wrists. Teresa looked frantically toward the gallery, searching for any of her old high-society friends, but the rows were entirely empty, save for me, as I sat in the front row in a flawless navy blue suit, my expression completely motionless and stone-calm.
