By noon, the rain over the city had cleared, leaving a harsh winter light pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my corporate headquarters. I sat at the head of the boardroom table, dressed in a tailored charcoal blazer, my hair pulled back into a flawless, sharp twist.
Sofia was down the hall in the executive daycare suite, happily eating a fresh meal under the care of a certified specialist.
Marcus Bell laid a secondary file on the mahogany table in front of me. "It gets worse, Elena. When we ran the deep-dive audit on the childcare transfers you were sending to Teresa every month, we discovered the secondary routing logs."
I looked down at the documents. The 38,000 pesos I had been faithfully sending every month for Sofia’s development hadn't been going to a nanny or an educational fund.
"They were routing the money directly into a private investment portfolio registered to Elena’s fiancé," Marcus explained, pointing at a sequence of fraudulent digital signatures. "Your husband Marco forged your co-signer authorization on a corporate expansion loan three months ago, using your personal real estate deed as collateral."
A cold, unbreakable focus washed over my face. "They didn't just neglect my daughter. They used her maintenance fund to finance Elena's wedding and Marco's bad investments."
The double glass doors of the boardroom were suddenly shoved open. Marco burst inside, followed closely by Teresa and Elena. Their designer clothes looked wrinkled, their previous high-society arrogance completely replaced by a desperate, wild panic.

"Elena, please!" Teresa cried out, her hands shaking as she reached toward the table. "Your father-in-law needs his medication! You can't do this to us over a minor misunderstanding on the terrace! We are family!"
"You are a collection of liabilities, Teresa," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion, level and cold. "And today, the ledger is balanced."
