The overhead monitors flickered to life, displaying the unedited security footage from our apartment's smart-home network. The entire boardroom watched in absolute silence as the camera captured the exact sequence from the night of my return: six grown adults laughing over lobster and champagne while a four-year-old girl sat shivering in the dark outside, staring through the glass.
The judge slammed her gavel down with a thunderous CRACK that echoed off the stone walls.
"In my twenty years on this bench," the judge declared, her eyes locked onto Marco and Teresa with profound disgust, "I have rarely witnessed such a calculated display of domestic exploitation and financial corruption. Marco Callahan, you are hereby remanded into custody pending trial for grand larceny, corporate forgery, and intentional child endangerment."
A sharp, broken sob escaped Elena’s lips as two bailiffs stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Marco’s wrists. Teresa sank back into her seat, her face completely pale as Marcus Bell handed her defense attorney a secondary civil injunction, seizing their remaining personal vehicles and offshore balances to satisfy the corporate restitution order.
I stood up from the gallery, entirely unbothered by the chaos breaking out at the defense table. I walked out of the courtroom doors into the warm afternoon sun, where Sofia was waiting for me, holding her favorite stuffed animal.
