Chapter 13 - The Shadows of the Past Dissolve

The federal trial of Colette Sterling and the remaining Sterling-Vance conspirators began on a crisp autumn Monday downtown. The courtroom was packed to capacity with legal analysts, financial journalists, and curious observers eager to witness the downfall of high-society corruption.
Archer and I sat in the front row of the gallery, our fingers tightly interlaced. Evelyn had chosen to remain safely at the estate, resting comfortably, but her spirit of resilience felt palpable beside us.
Across the courtroom, sitting at the defense table, Colette Sterling looked unrecognizable. Gone were the designer silk dresses, the arrogant smirks, and the diamond jewelry. Clad in a standard orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy bun, she looked hollow, defeated, and utterly terrified.
When the presiding federal judge reviewed the mountains of digital evidence, corporate audit logs, and security footage detailing her systematic embezzlement, elder abuse, and financial fraud, the verdict was delivered swiftly and without mercy.
“On all counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, elder abuse, and conspiracy,” the judge announced, slamming his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack, “this court sentences Colette Sterling to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.”
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Colette buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, hysterical sob as federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed her by the arms, and hauled her away toward the holding cells.
As we walked out of the courthouse and stepped into the warm autumn sunlight, a swarm of reporters and camera crews rushed forward, shouting questions from every direction.
*“Miss Hayes! How does it feel to see justice served?”*
*“Mr. Langford, what’s next for the Langford-Hayes foundation?”*
Archer raised a single hand, instantly silencing the chaotic crowd. He didn't pull away from me; instead, he pulled me closer, resting his arm securely around my shoulders for the cameras to capture.
“The past belongs to the past,” Archer stated calmly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “Today, we close a dark chapter of betrayal and cruelty. Tomorrow, we build a future rooted in compassion, integrity, and genuine love. Thank you, and good day.”

As our luxury town car pulled away from the courthouse steps, heading back toward the sanctuary of the estate, I let out a deep, cleansing breath. The nightmare was truly over. We were finally free.
