Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Threat from the Shadows

The fallout from Archer’s public announcement at the charity gala swept through the morning tabloids like wildfire. Headlines screamed across every digital screen and newspaper stand in the city: *“BILLIONAIRE HEIR DITCHES HIGH-SOCIETY FIANCÉE FOR FORMER HOUSEKEEPER!”* and *“THE CINDERELLA OF LANGFORD ESTATE: WHO IS PIPPA HAYES?”*
While the media circus raged outside the high iron gates of the estate, inside the mansion, an eerie, unnatural quiet had settled over the halls.
I sat in the sunlit conservatory, reviewing architectural blueprints for the estate’s new community outreach center—a project Archer had funded in my honor—when Evelyn rolled her wheelchair across the parquet floor, her expression unusually grim.
“Pippa, my dear,” Evelyn said softly, pausing beside my table.
I immediately looked up, sensing the tension in her posture. “What is it, Evelyn? Is everything alright?”
“I just received a secure courier package from our family’s legal vault,” Evelyn explained, placing a heavy, sealed manila envelope on the table. “It’s from my late husband’s private archives. It concerns the true reason why Colette and Elena targeted our family so aggressively in the first place.”
My heart skipped a beat. I opened the envelope and pulled out a stack of yellowed, decades-old documents alongside a series of modern digital flash drives. “What are these?”
“They aren't just corporate records,” Evelyn said, her voice trembling slightly. “They pertain to a rival conglomerate—the Sterling-Vance Group. Colette wasn't just a gold-digger trying to marry into our money, Pippa. She was a planted operative. Her family’s entire fortune was built on stealing my husband’s patents thirty years ago. When they realized Archer was getting close to uncovering the truth through our corporate audits, they used Colette to infiltrate our home from the inside out.”
A cold dread washed over me. “If they planted her... and we sent her to federal prison... then her family won't stop until they destroy everything we've built.”

Before Evelyn could answer, the security alarm system across the entire estate suddenly shrieked to life. A piercing red light flashed strobe-like through the grand hallways, followed by the automated automated voice of the mainframe: *“WARNING: PERIMETER BREACH AT EASTERN GATE. INTRUDER ALERT.”*
