Chapter 8 - The Charity Gala and the Red Carpet Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Hotel was a dazzling spectacle of crystal, gold, and silk. Hundreds of the city’s elite—socialites, politicians, and business magnates—mingled under massive chandeliers, sipping champagne and whispering gossip among themselves.
Tonight was the annual Langford Foundation Charity Gala, and all eyes were waiting to see how Archer Langford would handle his public debut following the sudden downfall of both his former fiancée and his aunt.
When the grand oak doors swung open, the murmurs in the room died down into absolute silence.
Archer entered first, wearing an impeccably tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his commanding presence. But it was the woman on his arm that sent a collective shockwave through the entire room.
I stepped forward in a breathtaking, floor-length emerald silk gown that hugged my silhouette gracefully, my hair styled in soft, cascading waves, with a delicate diamond pendant sparkling against my collarbone—a gift from Evelyn.
All eyes locked onto us. Whispers erupted like a swarm of angry hornets.
*“Isn’t that the former housekeeper?”*
*“Where is Colette Sterling?”*
*“He brought a working-class girl to the premier event of the season? Has he lost his mind?”*
I felt my cheeks flush slightly, the sudden wave of intense scrutiny making my palms sweat. But before anxiety could take root, Archer’s arm tightened around my waist, his warm fingers pressing reassuringly against my hip. He leaned down, whispering softly near my ear, “Don't let them rattle you, Pippa. You belong here just as much as anyone in this room.”
We walked down the sweeping marble staircase, stepping directly into the lion's den of high society gossip. Several prominent socialites approached us, their smiles tight and venomous.
“Archer, darling!” cooed Lady Margaret, a notoriously vicious tabloid fixture, stepping directly into our path. “We were all expecting Colette tonight. Who on earth is your... charming guest? Did you hire a new stylist?”
The insult was thinly veiled, dripping with condescension. The surrounding crowd leaned in, waiting to see how the billionaire heir would humiliate his companion.
Archer didn't even blink. His expression turned into that signature, lethal mask of absolute ice.
“Lady Margaret,” Archer replied, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. “Allow me to introduce you to Miss Pippa Hayes. Not my stylist, but the newly appointed Director of Estate Operations for the Langford family, the savior of my mother’s life, and—most importantly—the woman who will soon be my wife.”
The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated pandemonium. Gasps echoed from every corner of the room. Flashbulbs from hidden tabloid photographers suddenly began flashing like lightning storms.
I froze, my eyes widening in shock as I stared up at Archer. *Wife?* He hadn't mentioned marriage quite like that!

Archer simply smiled down at me, his eyes dancing with mischief and profound affection, proving to the entire world that he didn't care about their rules, their social hierarchy, or their whispered judgments.
