Chapter 2: Unpacking the Hidden Fractures

Officer Vance guided Clara and Lily toward the small dining table near the kitchen, leaving Evelyn standing alone in the center of the living room. Evelyn grumbled under her breath, turning her back to look out the window, her silhouette stiff and unyielding. Clara sat down, pulling Lily onto her lap. The little girl was still clutching her teddy bear, her breathing finally slowing down, though her pink shirt was still damp with tears.

"Thank you, Officer," Clara said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m sorry you were dragged into this. I was away for an interview for a new job and a potential apartment. I thought Lily would be safe here for just a few hours."

"You don't need to apologize to me, Clara," Officer Vance replied, pulling out a chair and sitting down so he was at eye level with them. He kept his cap on the table, showing a friendly, approachable demeanor. "My main concern is Lily's well-being. A child should never view the police as a threat or a punishment. We are here to help them, always."

Lily peeked out from behind her teddy bear, her large brown eyes looking at the silver badge on Vance's chest. "Are you mad at me?" she whispered.

Vance offered her a warm, genuine smile. "Not at all, Lily. In fact, I think you have a very brave protector right there," he said, gently tapping the teddy bear's ear. "What's his name?"

"Barnaby," Lily murmured, squeezing the toy tighter.

"Well, Barnaby told me that you are a very good kid who just had a really tough day. Is that true?" Vance asked.

Lily nodded slowly, a tiny hint of a smile appearing on her face before vanishing.

Clara sighed, rubbing her forehead. She explained to Officer Vance that they had been staying with Evelyn for the past three weeks after Clara's divorce. It had been a temporary arrangement, but Evelyn's rigid, old-school parenting methods had created constant friction. Evelyn believed in absolute, unquestioning obedience, often using fear and intimidation to enforce rules. Clara had spent every day trying to shield Lily from her grandmother's harsh rebukes, but today, while Clara was away trying to secure their independence, Evelyn had crossed a dangerous line.

"I understand this is a difficult transition," Officer Vance said, writing some notes in his pocketbook. "But we need to ensure this environment is emotionally safe for Lily. Constant fear of being taken away can have long-lasting effects on a child's development."

Evelyn suddenly spoke up from the living room, her voice sharp. "I can hear you, you know! I have kept a roof over their heads, and this is the thanks I get? If my rules are too harsh, they are free to leave."

Clara looked down at Lily, then back at the officer. The decision she had been delaying was suddenly very clear. They could not spend another night under this roof.
