Chapter 4: A Quiet Departure into the Night

Within thirty minutes, Clara had packed their essentials. The duffel bag and the suitcase she had brought home from her interview were zipped and ready by the door. Officer Vance picked up the heavier suitcase, refusing to let Clara carry it herself.

"Thank you, Officer Vance," Clara said as they walked back into the living room.

Evelyn was sitting in her favorite armchair, staring blankly at the television screen, which was muted. She did not look up as they entered, her jaw set in a hard, stubborn line.

"Goodbye, Mom," Clara said gently, hoping for some sign of regret or softness, but none came. Evelyn remained silent, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

Lily held Clara's hand as they walked out of the apartment and down the brightly lit hallway of the building. As they stepped out onto the sidewalk, the cool night air hit them, carrying the distinct scent of autumn rain and city asphalt. A patrol car was parked at the curb, its amber lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

"My car is parked just a block away," Clara said, pointing down the street.

"I'll walk you to your car," Officer Vance said. "It's the least I can do."

As they walked, Vance handed Clara a small white card. "This has the number for our precinct's community outreach program. We offer family counseling and support services. It's completely free, and they can help you navigate this transition. Lily is a wonderful girl, Clara. She just needs stability right now."

"I can't thank you enough," Clara said, tears pricking her eyes once more, though this time they were tears of gratitude. "You didn't just defuse a situation tonight. You saved us from a cycle of fear."

Vance smiled, his dark eyes warm. "Just doing my job. But honestly, seeing a mother stand up for her child like that is the best part of my day."

They reached Clara's compact sedan. Clara secured Lily into her car seat in the back, making sure Barnaby was tucked in safely beside her. Lily looked out the window at Officer Vance, waving a small hand.

Vance saluted her playfully. "Keep being brave, Lily. And remember, Barnaby is on duty to protect you, too."

Lily giggled, a sound that brought an instant wave of relief to Clara's chest. Clara got into the driver's seat, started the engine, and pulled away from the curb. In the rearview mirror, she saw Officer Vance watching them go until they turned the corner, his silhouette fading into the golden glow of the streetlights.
