Chapter 5: The Sanctuary of Aunt Sarah
The drive to Queens was quiet. Lily fell asleep quickly, her head tilted to the side, resting against the soft fabric of her car seat. Clara drove carefully through the wet city streets, her mind racing with thoughts of the future. She felt a mix of liberation and anxiety. Leaving Evelyn's apartment was the right choice, but the reality of being a single mother with limited savings was daunting.
They arrived at Sarah's apartment building around nine o'clock. Sarah, a warm woman with bright eyes and curly blonde hair, was already waiting for them at the door. As soon as she saw Clara carrying the sleeping Lily, she ushered them inside with a quiet efficiency.
"Oh, Clara," Sarah whispered, helping her set down the bags. "I'm so glad you called. Let's get Lily into bed first."
Together, they carried Lily into the spare bedroom. Clara gently laid her down on the bed, removing her pink shirt and replacing it with comfortable pajamas. She placed Barnaby right next to her. Lily stirred slightly, hugging the bear closer, but did not wake up.
Once Lily was asleep, Clara and Sarah sat at the small kitchen table, sipping warm herbal tea. The apartment was cozy, filled with the comforting scents of lavender and vanilla, a stark contrast to the sterile, tense atmosphere of Evelyn's home.
"I can't believe Evelyn called the police," Sarah said, shaking her head in disbelief. "That is incredibly cruel. Lily must have been terrified."
"She was," Clara said, her voice trembling. "She thought she was going to jail. If it hadn't been for Officer Vance, I don't know how I would have calmed her down. He was so gentle with her."
"You did the right thing by leaving," Sarah said, placing her hand over Clara's. "You can stay here as long as you need. No rent, no pressure. You need to focus on finding that job and getting Lily back on her feet."
"I had the interview today," Clara said, a small spark of hope lighting up her eyes. "It's for an administrative position at a children's medical center. The benefits are great, and they even have an subsidized on-site daycare. If I get it, we can afford our own place within a few months."

For the first time in a very long time, Clara felt a genuine sense of hope. The road ahead would be challenging, but they were finally safe.
