Chapter 8: Confronting the Unspoken Truths

While Clara and Lily were building their new routine, Evelyn remained in her silent, cold apartment. She had expected Clara to crawl back within forty-eight hours, apologizing for her defiance. But as the days turned into a week, the silence in the apartment became deafening. The empty spaces on the sofa where Lily used to play began to feel heavier.

One evening, Evelyn finally dialed Clara's number.

Clara was sitting on Sarah's couch, helping Lily with a puzzle, when her phone buzzed. Seeing her mother's name on the screen made her stomach clench. She hesitated, but decided to answer, wanting to establish a clear boundary.

"Hello, Mom," Clara said, her voice steady and controlled.

"Clara," Evelyn said, her voice sounding slightly strained, though she tried to maintain her usual commanding tone. "I assume you have run out of money by now. I am willing to let you return, provided you agree to follow my house rules and apologize for your dramatic exit."

Clara took a deep breath, remembering the advice from the family support counselor she had spoken to earlier that week. "No, Mom. We are not coming back. I got a job at the children's medical center, and Lily is doing wonderful in their daycare program. We are safe, happy, and we are staying with Sarah."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Evelyn sniffed. "So, you are choosing to live on charity rather than accept the help of your own mother? You are turning your back on family."

"You turned your back on us when you called the police on a terrified six-year-old child, Mom," Clara said, her voice shaking slightly but remaining firm. "You used fear as a weapon against my daughter. I will never allow anyone, not even you, to treat her that way."

"I raised you that way, and you turned out fine!" Evelyn argued, her voice rising.

"No, Mom," Clara replied softly, tears finally spilling over. "I didn't turn out fine. I spent my entire life feeling anxious, terrified of making mistakes, and believing I was never good enough. I am only now learning how to love myself, and I refuse to let Lily inherit that same pain. Until you can understand the damage you've caused and seek help, I cannot let you be around my daughter."

Without waiting for a response, Clara hung up. She felt a profound sense of release. She had finally spoken the truth that had been buried in her heart for decades.
