Chapter 6: A New Dawn and Lasting Shadows

The next morning, Lily woke up to the smell of pancakes. She rubbed her eyes and looked around the unfamiliar room. The walls were painted a soft, cheerful yellow, and a large orange cat was curled up at the foot of her bed. Lily smiled, reaching out to gently stroke the cat’s fur. The cat purred loudly, leaning into her hand.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Clara said, opening the door slowly. She was wearing a simple blue sweater and jeans, looking rested for the first time in weeks.
"Mommy, the kitty likes me," Lily said, her voice bright.
"That's Oliver," Clara smiled, sitting on the edge of the bed. "And I think he knows you're a very special girl. Are you hungry? Aunt Sarah made blueberry pancakes."
Lily nodded eagerly, grabbing Barnaby and hopping off the bed.
Breakfast was a lively affair. Sarah kept Lily laughing with silly jokes, successfully distracting her from the trauma of the previous night. However, Clara noticed that Lily still kept Barnaby close, holding him with one hand even while eating her pancakes. The shadow of Evelyn's threat had not completely vanished.
Later that afternoon, Clara received a phone call from an unknown number. Her heart skipped a beat, hoping it was the medical center.
"Hello?" Clara answered, her voice filled with anticipation.
"Clara, it's Officer Vance," the voice on the other end said. "I wanted to follow up and see how you and Lily are doing."
Clara felt a wave of relief. "Oh, Officer Vance. We are doing much better. We are staying with my friend Sarah in Queens. Lily is currently eating pancakes and playing with a cat. She's safe."
"I'm very glad to hear that," Vance said. "I actually spoke with a social worker from our family support division. She recommended a child psychologist who specializes in helping kids deal with sudden trauma and family transitions. If you're interested, I can email you her contact information."
"Yes, please," Clara said, writing down the name. "I want to make sure Lily doesn't carry this fear with her. She still won't let go of her teddy bear."
"It's completely normal for her to seek comfort right now," Vance explained. "Just give her time, reassurance, and keep doing what you're doing. You're a great mother, Clara."

"Thank you, Marcus," Clara said, using his first name for the first time. "Your support means more to us than you know."
As she hung up, Clara felt a deep sense of gratitude for the community around them. They were not alone in this fight.
