Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

To the outside world, my life was a Manhattan fairy tale. My husband, Julian, was a hotshot corporate director bringing home $25,000 a month. I, Sarah, was his beautiful, pregnant, stay-at-home wife. "She’s a financial genius, Sarah," Julian would say, adjusting his bespoke Tom Ford tie in the mirror while I wore a faded grey sweatshirt over my growing baby bump. "She's investing it for our child’s future. You wouldn't understand; you just sit at home all day."
I swallowed the lump in my throat. I had given up my career—or so he thought—to build a family. Now, I was forced to beg for grocery money from my mother-in-law, who treated me like a pesky intern. I was trapped in a golden cage, but the gold was starting to rust. And I was tired of playing the fool.
