Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail

The mother stood perfectly still, the wet motel reservation held firmly in her hand. The water on the floor was still seeping into the edges of the open suitcase, but the tension in the room had frozen. Her name was Claire, though I wouldn’t learn that until later. Right then, she was just a mother realizing her own family was trying to steal her sick child.
"Explain this," Claire said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, terrifying whisper.
Her mother, the grandmother who had just tried to pour a bucket of dirty water over a four-year-old’s IV site, took a step back. "Claire, you’re hysterical. We were just trying to bathe her. The papers are for a vacation."
"A vacation," Claire repeated. Her eyes flicked to the copied oncology records in her left hand. "You packed her central-line treatment protocols for a vacation? Without telling me?"
The older sister—the great-aunt who had bruised my ribs with a cleaning cart—stepped forward. "Your daughter is dying because of those toxic chemicals they pump into her. We found a holistic clinic in Nevada. They use natural remedies. We were leaving tonight."
The silence that followed was suffocating. I tightened my grip on the little girl in my arms. Her small, fragile fingers were still twisted into my work apron.
Claire’s face drained of color. They weren’t just taking her. They were going to stop her chemotherapy. They were going to take a four-year-old with a brain tumor across state lines and treat her with crystals and juices.
"You were going to kidnap my daughter," Claire stated, the reality settling into her bones.

"We were saving her!" her mother snapped, lunging for the papers.
Claire didn’t flinch. She shoved her mother’s hand away. "Call 911," she told me, never taking her eyes off the two women. "Now."
