Chapter 3 - The Desperate Struggle

The great-aunt hit the floor hard, sending a fresh wave of spilled water splashing against the baseboards. The grandmother shrieked and shoved Claire, trying to clear the path, but Claire absorbed the hit and shoved back with twice the force.

I retreated to the far corner of the room, keeping the little girl pinned safely against my chest. I kept the dry towel securely wrapped around her IV dressings. If that line got infected by the dirty water they had tried to pour on her, a simple fever could be a death sentence for a child with no immune system.

"They’re getting violent," I yelled into the phone over the chaos. "Room 114. Please hurry!"

"Units are one minute out," the dispatcher promised.

The grandmother, realizing that physical force wasn't going to get past Claire, tried a different tactic. She started crying. Loud, theatrical sobs.

"Claire, please! She’s my granddaughter! The doctors are killing her, can't you see that? Look how pale she is! Look at her hair! We paid a private driver, he’s waiting in the parking lot. Just let us take her to Nevada. We can cure her!"

"She has cancer, Mom!" Claire screamed, tears finally spilling hot and fast down her own cheeks. "She needs an oncologist, not a scam artist in the desert! You would have killed her!"

Footsteps pounded on the exterior walkway. Red and blue lights suddenly strobed through the cheap motel blinds, casting frantic shadows across the wet floor, the scattered medicine bottles, and the overturned suitcase.

"Police! Open the door!" a heavy voice shouted from outside.

Claire stepped back, unlocking the deadbolt and throwing the door wide open.
