Chapter 5 - The Medical Check

Within minutes, an ambulance arrived. The paramedics took over the motel room, turning it into a makeshift triage center.

One EMT gently unwrapped the towel I had placed over Lily’s arm. He carefully inspected the clear plastic dressing covering her IV port. "It’s completely dry," he announced, shining a penlight over the site. "No signs of contamination or infection. Her vitals are a little elevated from stress, but she’s safe."

Claire let out a breath that sounded like a physical collapse. She leaned against the wall, clutching Lily’s good hand.

Another paramedic sat me on the edge of the bed. He cleaned the four deep gouges on my cheek with an antiseptic wipe that stung like fire. He pressed on my ribs, noting the dark purple bruising forming where the cleaning cart had hit me.

"You took a heavy hit," the paramedic said kindly. "You saved this kid from a massive systemic infection. If that dirty water had gotten into her central line with her white blood cell count... well, it wouldn't have been good."

I looked over at Lily. She was wrapped in a clean, dry thermal blanket, resting her head on Claire’s shoulder. She looked so small, but her eyes were locked onto me. She offered a tiny, exhausted smile. I smiled back. My cheek burned when I did, but I didn't care.

A detective in a plain suit walked into the room. He held a clipboard and looked incredibly serious.

"Ma'am," he said, addressing Claire. "We found the private transport van idling behind the building. The driver confessed. He was paid ten thousand dollars in cash to drive your mother and aunt to a compound in Nevada."

Claire closed her eyes. "Oh my god."

"They had fake guardianship papers in the suitcase," the detective added grimly.
