Chapter 9 - The Remission Party

The park was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. Streamers were tied to the pavilion, and a massive banner read "KICKED CANCER’S BUTT!" in bright pink letters.
I felt a little nervous as I walked across the grass. I had brought a small wrapped present—a stuffed bear with a doctor’s coat—but I wasn't sure if I would fit in with Claire’s friends and extended, healthy family.

"Of course I did, sweetie. I wouldn't miss this for the world," I said, tears pricking my eyes.
Claire walked over, wiping her own eyes. She looked ten years younger. The heavy bags under her eyes from the hospital days were completely gone. She pulled me into a tight embrace, sandwiching Lily between us.

I looked around. Dozens of people were smiling at me. Some were clapping. For the first time in a long time, I didn't feel like just a housekeeper. I felt like I belonged somewhere.
