Chapter 4 - Flashing Lights

Three police officers burst into the room. Their eyes immediately scanned the chaotic scene: the overturned luggage, the wet floor, the two older women looking panicked, Claire crying with her fists clenched, and me in the corner, bleeding from the face while holding a terrified, bald little girl.

"Separate them!" the lead officer ordered.

One officer pulled the grandmother and great-aunt into the hallway. Another stepped between Claire and the door, while a third—a female officer—approached me slowly, her hands visible and unthreatening.

"Ma'am, is the child injured?" the officer asked gently.

"I don't think so," I said, my voice finally trembling as the adrenaline began to crash. "But they tried to pour dirty bucket water over her central IV line. I stopped them. They fought me."

The little girl finally lifted her head. She looked at her mother.

"Mommy," she croaked.

Claire broke past the officer and fell to her knees in front of us. I gently transferred the little girl into her mother’s arms. Claire buried her face in her daughter’s neck, rocking her back and forth, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I've got you, Lily. Mommy's got you. Nobody is taking you anywhere," Claire whispered frantically.

The female officer shined a flashlight on my face. She winced at the deep scratch marks running down my cheek and the dark bruises swelling on my arms. "We need paramedics in here," she called into her radio. "We have an assaulted bystander and a medically fragile pediatric patient."

Outside, through the open door, I could hear the grandmother screaming at the cops. "That maid assaulted us! Arrest the maid! She stole our granddaughter!"

The lead officer walked back inside, holding the sodden motel reservation and the copied medical records Claire had recovered. He looked at me, then at Claire. "I think they're going to have a hard time selling that story."
