Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The next few months were a blur of legal proceedings. I was called in for two depositions. I had to sit across a heavy mahogany table from the grandmother’s defense lawyer, but I didn't back down.

I repeated my story calmly and clearly. The physical evidence was overwhelming. The security cameras had caught the van. The forged papers were in police custody. And I still had faint scars on my cheek to prove the assault.

Faced with a mountain of evidence and my unwavering testimony, the grandmother and great-aunt eventually took a plea deal. They were sentenced to ten years in state prison for attempted kidnapping and child endangerment. Claire also secured a permanent, ironclad restraining order. They would never be allowed within five hundred feet of Lily again.

During those months, Claire and I texted often. She told me Lily was recovering well from her latest round of chemotherapy. Without the stress of her toxic grandmother interfering, the household was peaceful. Lily was eating better. Her energy was returning.

I returned to work at the motel. The corporate office had heard about the incident and gave me a commendation and a promotion to Head of Housekeeping. I didn't have to push the heavy carts anymore, but every time I passed Room 114, I thought of the little girl who had held onto my apron like a lifeline.

One Tuesday afternoon, an envelope arrived in my mailbox. The handwriting was elegant. Inside was a thick, textured card with a picture of a smiling little girl with peach-fuzz hair growing back on her head.

Lily is in remission. We are celebrating this Saturday. You have to be there.
