Chapter 3: Three Years of Silence

Ryan had not always been violent.
In the beginning, he was charming. He pursued me relentlessly after my father died. He said all the right things about wanting to build a life together. I was grieving and lonely, and he made me feel seen.
The control started small. He suggested I stop working because “the Hayes family doesn’t need another income.” He began making decisions about the house without asking me. When I pushed back, he would grow cold for days.
The first time he hit me was after I refused to sign over part of the lake property to his mother. He apologized immediately, said it would never happen again, and bought me expensive gifts.
I stayed because I thought love required patience.
I stayed because I had no one else.
I stayed because my father had taught me that family was everything—even when family hurt you.
