Chapter 5: The Arrival

At exactly 11:45 a.m., Ryan’s car pulled into the driveway. Victoria sat in the passenger seat, already smiling like she owned the place.

I stood at the front door and watched them.

Ryan got out first, carrying Victoria’s overnight bag like a dutiful son. He looked up at the house with satisfaction.

Then he saw his clothes.

They were scattered across the lawn—shirts, suits, shoes, even his favorite leather jacket. The wind had already started carrying some of them toward the street.

His face went blank.

Victoria stepped out of the car and stared.

Before Ryan could answer, two police cars turned into the driveway.
