Chapter 13 - THE FAMILY GATHERING

Later that evening, the bakery closed its doors, and Lorenzo took me to the estate’s newly renovated gardens.

The sun was setting over the skyline of Chicago, casting a golden light across the pine trees.

Antonio served us dinner on the private patio overlooking the fountains.

“How was the first day at the new shop?” Lorenzo asked, pouring wine into two crystal glasses.

This time, he held his glass gently, his scarred palm fully healed.

“It was perfect,” I said, taking a sip. “We sold out of everything by four in the afternoon.”

“I expected nothing less from my wife,” he said proudly.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small leather document folder.

He slid it across the table toward me.

“What’s this?” I asked, opening the folder.

Inside were legal deeds and property transfers for a dozen community shelters and culinary schools across the city.

All of them were registered under my name.

“You wanted to make a difference in this city,” Lorenzo said gently.

“This is my gift to you. You bring light into my world, Camila.”

“I want you to bring that light to the rest of Chicago.”

May you like

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at the documents.

He was a dangerous man to the world, but to me, he was a man who listened to every wish of my heart.
